This Memorial Day

As much as I’m glad that people are thinking of our veterans and active duty military today…today is Memorial Day.  Veterans Day is November 11.  That is the day we honor all those that have served and are serving.

Memorial Day is the day we remember and honor those that made the ultimate sacrifice, those that died that we may be free.

Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service.  In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries.  A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

So, yes, please feel free to thank a vet.  Wish them well.  Grill some burgers.  All of that.  But all of the ads and facebook posts by those that should know better wishing everyone a Happy Memorial Day?  It’s disrespectful and a sad reminder of our societal and educational systems failures.  Of those on my feed…

Embarrassing Facebook fails:

  • Despicable Me Minions
  • Lupo’s Original Spiedies Marinade
  • Nautica
  • 99 Restaurant
  • Annie’s Eats
  • Price Chopper Supermarkets
  • CakeWalk

Look, believe me, I get it.  You’re sincere.  You are proud of/love our vets.  But it’s not Veterans Day.  Despite what it has become, there really is a meaning to Memorial Day.  And that meaning is not ‘have a free donut, veterans’.

Thanks to those that get it:

  • Ball Canning & Recipes
  • King Arthur Flour
  • Amazon
  • The Kansas City Chiefs
  • The Armenian Kitchen.com
  • Southwest Airlines
  • ShopRite (although…they couldn’t find a picture of a flag from the front?  And despite the “hot Memorial Day deals”)
  • Hannaford Supermarkets

Those that almost get it:

  • Junk Food Guy
  • Union Cafe
